WITFORD is excited to showcase Kristi Nelson of KMNelson Design as our featured designer.
Kristi Nelson is recognized in the world of design for her sophisticated use of proportion, scale, composition and color to craft bespoke environments that are true interpretations of the client’s vision.
Kristi’s background and training as a fine artist is the foundation for the depth of her compositions. Private art lessons from age seven would later result in scholarships for her undergraduate degrees in both Studio Art and Art History from Indiana University, as well as a Masters degree in the same curriculum from the Paris American Academy. Not surprisingly, this education shaped Kristi’s disciplined and exacting approach to the application of the classical tenets of proportions, her knowledge of balancing negative and positive space, the interaction of light and color, and skill in drawing the eye through a composition.
As principal of KMNelson Design firm, Kristi oversees conceptual design and plays a lead role in program analysis, design development and client presentation. Kristi’s corporate background is critical to the management of her firm’s projects and the value she brings to her clients. Proactive communication, commitment to established timelines and budgets, and active listening skills honed during her years in marketing and advertising, are the backbone of her business and project management practices ensuring client confidence and design success.

Here’s one of many beautiful samples from Kristi Nelson: An Equestrian Estate in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
This project sample is of an estate home nestled in a gated equestrian community in San Juan Capistrano. Used as a getaway home for the owner but a primary residence for her daughter who is a competitive equestrienne in the national junior’s circuit and whose training facility is nearby.
The project task was to take a cold, outdated Mediterannean house and turn it into a warm, inviting and personality driven home. The family has a quirky sense of humor and love of color which gave Kristi the opportunity to take the equestrienne concept and turn it into something modern and fun without it being an ode to English Country. By using a palette and mix of textures evocative of fields and barns, funky art and accessories and softly contemporary furnishings from such names as Julian Chichester and Palacek, we created a highly personal ode to the lifestyle.
- End tables and various accessories in both rooms are from Julian Chichester and Palacek.
- Rugs are custom from Atelier Lapchi – yellow and green for straw and grass.
- Sitting room features basket weave wood veneer wallpaper on ceiling, leather and velvet seating, and blue-green grass-cloth wallpaper for additional textural contrast.
- Living room is anchored by new, stacked field-stone fireplace, warm woods, leather and chenille for comfort and coziness. Bronze metal accents add depth while accessories and art are humorous reference to “farm life”.
